Teaching Philosophy
A student contributing to class in groups and individually helps them solidify concepts. I believe active contribution increases retention of information, because the students create connections that make the information more readily accessible in their own memory. It is vital their contribution is valuable for them as individuals and students. I work to actively engage students through hands-on activities, repeated informal assessment, and create opportunities for ownership of their work. Together these things allow students access to multiple forms of learning, and are able to leave the lab or classroom with a product (physical or metaphorical) they can take pride in building themselves. I use active-learning techniques while incorporating research opportunities in my courses to help students over come barriers they may be experiencing in their access to skills you learn while performing research tasks.
